Veloce Buyer's Guide to BSA 500 and 650 Twins
11 March 2008
If you're thinking of buying one of the venerable BSA twins of the 50s and 60s, then this handy guide will be a useful tool in sorting the wheat from the chaff when searching out that true classic.

Old bikes are always a labour of love and Peter Henshaw's book gives you handy hints on spotting BSA twins which have had the necessary TLC lavished upon them during their working life. These are bikes you want to buy, not some bodged up and hastily Solvol-treated instant classic.

There are sections on typical running costs, a used bike value guide, plus club, website and specialist publication source information, which is essential if you're buying anything old and inevitably needing spares in the long run. Loads of photos, an `is it genuine?' checklist, not to mention Henshaw's own favourite models from the lengthy BSA 500/650 total production run, all combine to make this book well worth the cost of two monthly bike magazines.

Duke DVD; 1989 MX Season Review
10 March 2008
The 1989 Motocross 500cc World Championship Review released on DVD

The mouth-watering prospect of a stellar line-up of world champions and hard-charging challengers promised a vintage year of motocross as the 1989 season opened.

Britain’s own former World Champion Dave Thorpe, reigning 500cc World Champion Eric Geboers, former title-holder Georges Jobe, plus rising stars Kurt Nicoll and Jeff Leisk, were ready for what promised to be a truly unforgettable year of MX action.

Now, for the first time on DVD, re-live this amazing season in awesome footage of the best in the world, doing what they do best. Featuring all the mud-spitting, high-jumping, bike-smashing moments of a dramatic year of motocross, this is the ultimate record of a titanic championship battle.

Share the heartbreak of Australian Leisk who, in his first full 500cc season, could have started the year with victory in both races in Holland, only to be cruelly robbed of victory by a fuel problem. Watch in awe as old-hands Geboers and Thorpe quickly take control of the championship chase, dominating the rain-soaked French round and sun-baked races in Italy. With a third of the season done, the pair were tied at the top of the table.

But the drama doesn’t stop there! In the middle of the season Kees van der Ven found his form and forced his way into title contention, just tailing fellow championship hopefuls Nicoll, of Britain, and Leisk. With the end in sight, Brit hero Thorpe trailed his illustrious rival – but he refused to admit defeat and exploited a dip in form from the Belgian to snatch win after win. Thorpe’s double victory on home ground is just one highlight you’ll want to watch again and again.

This DVD brings viewers the whole story of a truly dramatic season, which culminated in an unforgettable showdown in Luxembourg where Thorpe demonstrated the skills that made him a multi-world champion. This is an incredible tail of a real comeback kid, showing Thorpe roaring to a third world title after two disastrous years ruined by injury. This review is a real celebration of a true British hero.

The official 1989 Motocross 500cc World Championship Review is released 10th March, priced at £16.99 on DVD, from leading video outlets or direct from Duke Video: Tel 01624 640000, fax 01624 640001 or email mail@dukevideo.com.

Vemar VTXE Streetfighter helmet 2008
07 March 2008
Vemar have given their VTXE touring helmet a matt black paint job that creates a mean and moody appearance on the outside while on the inside it offers an outstanding fit and high levels of comfort.

Unlike the majority of helmets in its price bracket the VTXE uses not one, or two, but three sizes of outer shell, giving a closer more comfortable fit across its range of five sizes: X-Small to Small share one shell, the second fits Medium and Large, and the third is for size X-Large. The shell itself is manufactured from light TRICOM, a blend of carbon, aramidic and fibreglass materials, weighing in at a modest 1490g.

Another feature unique to Vemar helmets is the use of polyurethane memory foam to manufacture the cheek pads, which retain their shape even after extended use, unlike traditional foam padding.

This helmet is as cool on the inside as it looks from the outside, thanks to the Vemar KLIMA air recycling system that draws in cooling air through push-to-operate vents on the front, which forces out warm air through an exhaust vent beneath the rear spoiler. The plush red lining offers a contrast to the dark exterior and is treated with Antimicrobial Sanitized Protection to ensure it stays fresh. It is also removable and washable.

Vemar’s easy-touch visor release system means that the visor can be removed in seconds with just two clicks and the Italian company has fitted it with a race-inspired ‘safety catch’ to prevent it popping off in a crash situation. It is fastened with a simple to operate quick-release buckle chin strap.

The Vemar VTXE Streetfighter helmet is approved to ECE 22.05, carries the ACU Gold Badge for motorcycle sport and is available in sizes X-Small to X-Large (54 – 62cm) in matt black priced at £149.99.

R & G Racing Tail Tidy for CBR1000 RR 2008
04 March 2008
R&G Racing - First To Sharpen And Secure The New Fireblade

R&G Racing are the first company to produce a tail tidy for the new Honda Fireblade along with a full crash protection range.

The R&G tail tidy allows owners of the new superbike to eliminate the stock bulky number plate hanger on the seat unit, leaving the Blade’s flowing tail design to remain unspoilt as Honda’s designers intended.

Though the tail tidy appears a simple looking unit, the move from underseat pipes on the 2008 Fireblade means the original plate hanger is a complicated affair, incorporating a storage compartment and tool tray. R&G invested heavily into the CAD design and moulding required to produce this intricate, yet subtle, unit that still allocates these features.

Finished in unpainted plastic that mirrors the original, the robust tail tidy, the 63rd to be offered for bikes from R&G, features three ultra bright number plate lights and allows the original indicators to be retained or replaced with micro units (also available from R&G).

As R&G have been the authority for crash protection in the UK since 2002, they’ve been equally as quick in providing a comprehensive range for those wishing to keep their new Fireblades in pristine condition.

The R&G protectors available cover areas on the machine most likely to be affected by a spill, mounting from the frame, swingarm, forks, bars and spindles. Much more than just plastic held on by bolts, the high-density Polyethylene (HDPE) bungs are designed to wear and not shatter while the particular grade of steel bolts help to absorb impact by bending, rather than snap or twist their mounting points on the bike.

Knox Kompakt Back Protector 2008
21 February 2008
Planet-Knox, the British protection specialists, have launched the third generation of their innovative roll-up back protector, the Kompakt.

As its name suggests, the Kompakt compresses a significant amount of protection into a highly portable package. The design team at Knox carefully styled the Kompakt so that it would sit comfortably beneath armoured motorcycle clothing while still covering all of the vulnerable areas of the back required under European safety standards.

At under 600g it is exceptionally light (less than half the weight of most racing style crash helmets), yet the Kompakt comfortably exceeds the current CE standard for back-protectors (1621-2, Level 1). Its naturally strong hexagonal honeycomb interior absorbs massive amounts of energy from and impact in a similar way to the crumple zone on a car.

This light and compact design makes for an extremely comfortable product and this aspect is enhanced by the broad Velcro waistband with Increased Posture Support (IPS) and cross-over Z-fastener shoulder strap system. There is even an option to fit a Knox CE-approved chest protector (£24.99).

It is designed for road riders who value comfort and practicality; the Kompakt rolls up and can be stored in a carry bag that measures just 33cm long by 15cm diameter. Available in sizes Small & Large, the new Knox Kompakt Back Protector sells for £59.99 including VAT and carry bag.

Venhill Powerhose for B-King, ZX-6R, GSX650F, Duke 848 etc
19 February 2008
Venhill has expanded its range of DOT and TÜV approved braided steel brake line kits to cover many popular 2008 models, including the Ducati 848 and 1098, new Kawasaki ZX-6R Ninja and Suzuki’s GSX650F, Hayabusa & B-King.

Venhill’s British-made brake lines are unique because they are the only manufacturer to produce all their hoses to comply with both the American DOT and German TÜV standards. In order to pass these stringent tests the Venhill brake lines must withstand a critical burst test at 10,000 psi, (brakes operate at around 25-30psi even under hard braking), a 1,445 Newtons (325 lbs) tensile pull test and survive a 35-hour whip test to check for resistance to fatigue. No wonder that race teams such as Hydrex Honda in BSB and Phase One Endurance rely on Venhill brake lines.

Venhill Powerhose Plus kits are simple to fit because they are model-specific and are designed to directly replace the original items. The individual kits comprise of all the hoses, banjos and fittings for a particular make and model of machine, including durable chrome plated steel fittings and factory-fitted rubber guides. They are even available in a range of colours – clear, blue, orange, red, yellow, light green and ‘original’ black. Owners can choose from standard factory fit or race style layouts.

Prices start at £43.48 Twin hose front kits retail for inc. VAT in chrome.

Call 01306 885111 or visit www.venhill.co.uk Single hose rear kits sell for £22.33 inc. VAT in chrome.
Convertibars System 2008
11 February 2008
ConvertiBARS™ are the first handlebar system that allows the rider to fully customize the riding position in less time than it takes to fill the tank with fuel.

One in five British motorcyclists owns a sportsbike and ConvertiBARS™ will help them to tailor their machines to better suit their size and use, whether on road or track.

ConvertiBARS™ may be fitted using the original brake lines, control cables and wiring. On certain models the amount of adjustment may be dramatically increased by modifying the bodywork or lengthening control cables. Once fitted, simply slacken the Cyclops clamp, using a hex key provided with the kit, and pull the bars back and up for relaxing long distance riding then drop them back down for a more track-orientated feeling.

Safety and performance is assured as ConvertiBARS™ are engineered to very high standards. The bars are manufactured from seamless stainless steel and the Cyclops clamp that secures the bars in place is incredibly strong. Laboratory testing shows that the ConvertiBARS™ are as strong and secure once positioned as the original equipment.

Most popular models of sports bike are covered, such as the GSX-R600/1000 series, as well as sports tourers like the Honda VFR and Blackbird. ConvertiBARS™ are supplied with illustrated instructions and an installation DVD. Prices start at £239.99 inc. VAT.
